The Irving Advisory Committee on Disabilities has recognized 12 students for their artwork as part of National Disability Awareness Month. Mayor Beth Van Duyne presented the awards during the Oct. 6 City Council meeting.

The annual poster contest provides fifth-grade students with an opportunity to showcase artistic talents as they express how a person with disabilities can use his or her abilities to be part of the community. Entries were judged on originality of concept and the content of how it relates to persons with disabilities.

The Irving City Council created the Advisory Committee on Disabilities in 1999 to serve as a contact and voice of residents with disabilities, and to review and discuss matters referred to the committee by the City Council and the city manager. The committee also provides recommendations to the council on matters pertaining to disability issues in the city.
